Mill Valley California Mountain House Renovation

Overview
This 1960’s vintage A-frame is located on a mountain ridge five miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The site provides dramatic views of Mount Tamalpais, Muir Woods National Monument, and the Pacific Ocean beyond. This northern California mountain house experienced a top to bottom renovation.

The Challenge
The original design did not respond to the views. Two clumsy interior staircases resulted in spaces that were dark and dysfunctional.
The Solution
Extensive interior and exterior renovation resulted in bright, open spaces that take full advantage of the natural environment. One elegantly transparent staircase created a focal point which enhanced the uncovered view.

Living Area: Before and After:
Use the slider to see the living area before and after. Replacing two clumsy interior staircases with one elegantly transparent stairwell opened up the floorplan. Painting the wood allows the light to flood into the space.
