Wailuku Maui Bungalow Restoration

2013

Wailuku, Maui

This project began with the purchase of an older home built in 1948. It is in a small neighborhood of similar homes built in the 1930’s and ‘40s. It is a special neighborhood because of the unusually dense concentration of homes from that era.

A large part of the charm of these older homes are the wood double-hung windows, all of which we were able to restore. We restored all the original solid brass door and window hardware. We found new solid brass hardware from restorer hardware suppliers that complimented the existing hardware design where we added new doors and cabinetry.

The home interior was in decent shape, just needing a significant cosmetic upgrade. We added new trim+cabinetry to match existing trim+cabinets. The ceiling is made of old sugar-mill bagasse ‘canac’ board. When necessary, we replaced damaged canac panels with ¼” drywall. We replaced the furring strip detail to conceal the drywall joints, which was the standard detail throughout the house and porch.

The Challenge

The home interior was in decent shape, just needing a significant cosmetic upgrade. The ceiling is made of old sugar-mill bagasse ‘canac’ board. When necessary, we replaced damaged canac panels with ¼” drywall.

The roof consisted of three layers of roofing – one added on top of the other over the years. The electrical system was still an old sparky knob+tube system from the early 1900’s. There was termite and water damage. An array of roof overhangs, a carport, and a deck+hot tub had been added.

There was an unfinished addition added to the original house – built by the previous owner, a general contractor.

The Solution

We rebuilt the entire roof, adding new rafter tail extensions at a more generous and consistent depth around the entire building. We repaired water and termite damage. We added energy efficient reflective sheathing, roof underlayment, copper flashing+drip edges, finished with a 130-mile-per-hour rated roof shingle system. We removed all roof overhangs, carport, and decks to restore the house to its original condition.

While the attic was exposed, we removed the old electrical system and entirely replaced it to meet current code.

We completed the unfinished addition and it is now used as an office.
